Something You May Not Know About Alabama

While no official nickname exists, Alabama, since the Civil War, has commonly been referred to as the Yellowhammer State. It is also known as the Cotton State and the Heart of Dixie. The Yellowhammer nickname was unofficially adopted in honor of Confederate troops who wore bits of bright yellow patches on their uniforms, same color as the popular Yellowhammer bird in Alabama.
