With many parts of the country experiencing the beginnings of winter, it is important to remember how to handle car accident claims
. Whether it be from slippery, icy roads or distracted drivers, car accidents can happen any time. While most often your car accident claim should progress without any issues, problems can (and sometimes do) arise. Because of this, our expert team of claims adjusters have compiled a few tips to help you navigate through this process as smoothly as possible.
What you need to do immediately
After a car accident has occurred (given are not seriously injured and physically able to do so) there are a few things you should do immediately. This is sometimes referred to by insurance adjusters as your “Car Crash Checklist.” First, and most importantly, never leave the site of a car accident. If there is any major damage to your vehicle or injuries, it is imperative to call the authorities, report the accident, and await the arrival of police or other first responders.
However, if there is any threat of fire or explosion, get yourself and any others away from the vehicle as quickly and safely as possible. Also, do not touch the scene unless you absolutely need to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. Do not try to fix any issues with the vehicle before taking pictures. Lastly, take pictures! Be sure to take pictures of any damage to the car. Even if you are not sure if there is much damage it is important to take pictures. Pictures can help your insurance agent and anyone else involved determine the damages done during the accident.
What you need to do once responding officers have arrived
Once you and anyone else involved in the accident are safe, it is time to contact your insurance provider. The number to reach a representative should be located on your insurance card. If you have misplaced this information or are unable to reach it, call (or look up) the number for member services. From there you should be prompted to tell the insurance agent what happened. Your agent will most likely need to know in depth information about the accident like the date and time the crash occurred, the weather conditions, any police records taken (like a statement or accident report), and your account of what took place. You may also need to discuss any transportation needs, at this time.
